Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce turns deadly

The California Department of Public Health confirmed the death but would not provide more details, citing patient privacy laws.

With Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Utah now reporting cases, the number of states affected now stands at 25.

California has 24 known cases, more than any other states.

They identified one farm as the source of the whole-head romaine lettuce that sickened several people at a correctional facility in Alaska.

If you don't know where your lettuce was grown, don't eat it, the CDC said. Symptoms often include diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Some also develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, with symptoms ranging from intense fatigue to decreased frequency of urination.

Other states reporting people sickened by E. Coli include Washington, Michigan, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, New York, Connecticut and MA.

Tesla accused of copycat semi truck design in $2 billion patent lawsuit
By August 2016, Nikola said it had more than 300 orders totalling over 7,000 trucks-a value of $2.3 billion. A Tesla spokesperson told Fortune that it's "patently obvious" the lawsuit has no merit.

Most people recover from E. coli on their own after a few days. However, the investigators think most of the cases are from romaine not grown at that particular farm.

Efforts to determine the source of the romaine that was chopped are slow going because of shipping and receiving records through the supply chain that closely resemble a tangled ball of yarn that they do a paper trail.

In other foodborne illness outbreak developments, the FDA said yesterday that the recalled shell eggs implicated in a multistate Salmonella Braenderup outbreak were also distributed to the US Virgin Islands and other overseas locations including several Caribbean locations (Bahamas, Haiti, Aruba, Cayman Islands, Saint martin, Turks & Caicos, Saint Barthelemy), as well at the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

The current outbreak is tied to romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, although health officials have not pinpointed a particular grower, supplier, distributor or brand connected to the outbreak. This includes romaine in any form, including in a salad mix.
