Uber Elevate Unveils Prototype for Flying Taxis That Will Soar Over DFW

After botching its attempt to lead the shift toward autonomous cars, the ride-hailing company appears to have doubled down on its even bigger ambition to avoid street-level traffic altogether.

Over the next few years, Uber will calibrate the price for its air taxi service to accommodate what the company says will eventually amount to several million rides a day.

Uber hopes to launch its Uber Air service by 2028.

Uber already has a partnership with NASA, the US government space agency, to develop software for managing large numbers of aircraft over cities, Moore said. As part of the deal, Uber will share its data with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to move the world closer to developing air traffic management systems for a world with flying cars.

Khosrowshahi's interview with CBS News came in conjunction with today's kickoff of the second annual Uber Elevate summit in Los Angeles, which focuses on Uber's plans to operate fleets of electric-powered, vertical-takeoff-and-landing air taxis.

Microsoft Isn't Done With Kinect Yet
It would be interesting to see if Microsoft will also announce about the changes that we are expecting from the upcoming update. Most of the tech giants are focusing on releasing their devices that run on AI in order to make the life of a user simpler.

The concept will be on display at the aforementioned Uber Elevate Summit which kicks off today and runs through Wednesday. The company's white paper lays out the details of its electric vertical take-off and landing idea as well. CBS reported that Uber is "still in the design phase". The aircraft will have a cruising speed between 150 mph to 200 mph, a range of 60 miles per charge, and the ability to recharge in around five minutes during peak hours.

Wired said that the Uber network would use aircraft made from a variety of manufacturers.

"The eCRM design is pedestrian friendly, as the propeller blades are as high as possible, leaving ample room for individuals to board and de-plane without having to duck", Uber's statement read, according to Fortune.

"It's actually going to be significantly easier we think, because a lot of the problems that you deal with on the road such as complicated street signs, such as other cars that may not be necessarily cooperative ー we're going to build the system to be autonomous for the future vision from the outset", said Nikhil Goel, head of product and advanced programs at Uber. "Finally, point of entry into the eCRMs is limited to one side, simplifying ground crew operations and reducing confusion for riders when they approach their eVTOL vehicle".
