Senate bill would unify all United States volcano monitoring activity

Hawaii residents and tourists have been preparing for a "larger explosion" for two weeks as smaller "fissures" began to appear around the main island; prompting experts to warn a catastrophic event could take place within days.

"This is the sort of explosive activity that was anticipated", Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey who was based at Kilauea from 2005 to 2015, said Thursday.

Those indoors are advised to stay indoors, close their doors, turn on the radio, and listen for updates from authorities. "I mean, I expected there would at least be one of the bigger earthquakes just before, or a boom or something".

Thursday's eruption, which occurred before dawn, produced an impressive ash plume, but otherwise caused minimal damage to surrounding areas. A video he shared on Facebook showed a towering column of ash reaching into a hazy sky.

Recent activity at Kilauea displaced more than 2,000 residents and consumed dozens of homes.

The National Weather Service has issued an ashfall advisory until 12 p.m. HST, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported.

Volcanic smog - known as "vog" - is now being emitted by the fissures, traveling toward populated areas and threatening residents with risky sulfur dioxide.

Aloha Junction Bed and Breakfast owner Robert Hughes says there were a few small earthquakes Wednesday but he heard nothing Thursday when the volcano erupted.

"Protect yourself from ash fallout", it said. Scientists said the molten rock there could start moving faster if fresher, hotter magma emerges from the ground.

His business has been hit hard by fears of the volcano, once an attraction for visitors.

"Volcanic eruptions, like the one in Hawaii and the one earlier this month at Cleveland Volcano in Alaska, are vivid reminders of why it is so critical to have continuous and reliable monitoring systems", U.S. Sen.

Officials have said they did not expect the explosion to be deadly as long as people remained out of the park. Shield volcanoes like Kilauea produce a runny, basaltic lava that does not tend to erupt as dramatically as steep stratovolcanos like Mount St. Helens. An eruption in 1924 killed one person and sent rocks, ash and dust into the air for 17 days.

Scientists predicted it would mostly release trapped steam from flash-heated groundwater released as though it was a kitchen pressure cooker.

Officials say that if explosions become more energetic, there could be boulders that fall up to a mile away or pea-sized fragments up to 4 miles away.

There's a lone webcam operating at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory's evacuated observation tower.

Some Big Island residents had feared "the big one" after Kilauea shot anvil-sized "ballistic blocks" into the visitors' auto park on Wednesday and was rocked by earthquakes that damaged buildings and cracked roads in the park that was closed last week.
