Pompeo threatens Iran with the 'strongest sanctions in history'

Foad Izadi, an assistant professor at the University of Tehran, predicts that President Donald Trump's recent decision to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear accord will have sobering consequences.

President Hassan Rouhani said that the United States can not make decisions for Iran or other independent countries in the world.

Pompeo - a longtime Iran hawk and fierce opponent of the 2015 agreement - earlier outlined an aggressive series of "painful" measures created to hurt Tehran, in his first key address since moving to the State Department from the Central Intelligence Agency in April.

Maas spoke to reporters in Buenos Aires at the end of a G20 meeting in the Argentine capital.

The Iran deal has drawn some of the starkest lines yet between the United States and its allies.

The US demands would fix what Israel said was a major shortcoming of the 2015 deal, namely linking Iran's other activities, including support for terror and threats against the Jewish state, with its nuclear program.

After the 1979 Iranian revolution, USA oil companies lost a major source of profits, and according to Izade, "the US wants to restore economic, political and military control over Iran as it tried to do in Iraq".

"We understand that our re-imposition of sanctions and the coming pressure campaign on the Iranian regime will pose financial and economic difficulties for a number of our friends", said the secretary of state. "We couldn't reach an agreement there", Pompeo said of his efforts.

President Donald Trump has long said the 2015 deal with Iran - also signed by Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - did not go far enough, and now wants the Europeans and others to support his hardline strategy.

Trump disclosure of Michael Cohen payment raises new legal questions
His Doral club, as was the case past year , dwarfed the rest of his golf properties, with revenues of nearly $75 million. Though it was published three decades ago, Trump's "The Art of The Deal" previous year generated as much as $1 million.

The fact is, Trump kept pushing Iran to exhibit peaceful intent, it did not and we are therefore in a situation where its continuing evil is more a real peril even if unseen by those who do not want to see.

European Union trade with Iran has increased dramatically since the sanctions on its economy were lifted as part of the 2015 deal.

"This list may seem long to some, but it is simply a reflection of the massive scope of Iranian malign behavior", Pompeo said.

Also responding to Pompeo, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif accused the USA of a "regression to old habits", saying Washington's diplomatic efforts were a "sham". "Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East". "The regime reaps a harvest of suffering and death in the Middle East at the expense of its people".

He said: "Our demands on Iran are not unreasonable: give up your program".

He warned that the United States would "crush" Iranian operatives and allies overseas and told Tehran to pull out forces under its command from the Syrian civil war where they back President Bashar Assad. For sanctions to work they must be comprehensive.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded sweeping changes that would force Iran effectively to reverse years of its foreign policies.

Still, Tehran is looking for backup plans: China's CNPC, which partnered with French Total on the Phase 11 development of the South Pars gas field, has already said it was ready to take over the French company's share of the project should it be forced to leave it if the U.S. Treasury does not grant it a sanction waiver. The sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen to one that rejoins the league of nations.

Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran deal came despite pleas from USA allies that he not do so, while the move was celebrated by the Israeli government, which has long criticized the agreement. And they are going to do this with a president whom most US allies don't trust and who has proved that he will not abide by agreements negotiated in good faith? Other analysts said the remarks amounted to a push for new leadership in Tehran and a return to traditional U.S. policy that could carry risks for the Trump administration.
