Winners and losers in THE reputation rankings 2018

Harvard University ranked first for the eighth consecutive year.

Earlier this week, UCD was ranked 42nd out of 18,000 universities worldwide in the 2018-19 Center for World University Rankings (http://cwur.org/2018-19.php), or CWUR, the largest academic ranking of global universities. The highest ranked British institution is Cambridge, which has retained its fourth place.

"India features in the table for the first time since 2011, with its flagship institution, the Indian Institute of Science, making the 91-100 banding", the editorial director of the rankings, Phil Baty, was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India.

'While we have seen evidence that some worldwide students are seeing the USA as a less attractive option, with declining applications, this data from the global academic community suggests the top U.S. universities remain the most highly regarded in the world by a mile'.

"To be judged among the Top 100 most powerful university brands is a great source of pride for everyone at Hebrew University and for Israel as a whole", HU president Asher Cohen said.

THE says that a university's brand is vital for attracting talent, strategic partners, philanthropy and investment.

Harvard University once again took the top spot, joined by 43 other American institutions.

The US continues to dominate the rankings, counting eight institutions in the top 10 and 44 across the top 100.

The other United Kingdom universities ranked in the top 100 were Manchester, in joint 51st, and Warwick in joint 81st.

Baty said: ¬ďAll UK universities have either fallen down the global pecking order this year or stayed static.

On China's performance, THE's Editorial Director of Global Rankings Phil Baty said: "It seems that China's relentless march up the global league tables has stalled - at least when it comes to the worldwide prestige of its universities".

The latest QS World University Rankings placed Tsinghua University and Peking University in 25th and 38th places respectively. The questionnaire targets published scholars for their views on excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar.
