Telegram says Apple is blocking its app updates globally

While Russia makes up only 7 percent of Telegram's user base, Apple is restricting updates for all Telegram users around the world, Durov said.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has said that Apple has been blocking updates for his app; preventing it from being prepared for the iOS 11.4 update that recently arrived.

He went on to allege that Apple had "prevented" updates to the Telegram app on a global basis after Russian officials ordered the platform removed from Tim Cook's walled garden.

Durov also blames Apple for Telegram being unable to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation due to the alleged block on updates.

Durov also claims the lack of app updates mean Telegram has also "been unable to fully comply with GDPR" before the May 25th deadline.

Durov said Apple's position means that it has been unable to comply with the new European Union data protection and privacy that came into force last week.

Pavel Durov, who co-founded Telegram with his brother Nikolai Durov in 2013, said that Apple sided with Russian Federation after the company refused to provide decryption keys for users' communications to the country's security agencies. The repeated request comes after Telegram's owners refused to hand over message transcripts to state security. We are continuing our efforts to resolve the situation and will keep you updated.

Telegram and its faster counterpart, Telegram X, were briefly pulled from the App Store in February, with Apple citing "inappropriate content" for app's removal.

"Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience".

The firm released a report yesterday full of data about how the App Store has evolved since its debut almost a decade ago.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. It's not clear what the consequences would be if it failed to do so.

"We sent them [Apple] a legally binding letter and are awaiting their legally binding reply".

Its hopping had the unintended effect of RKN knocking out entire swathes of IP addresses to stop Telegram, some 19 million at its peak, causing a number of other services to go down as well. Earlier this week, speaking to local newspapers, director of Roskomnadzor (Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media) said that the country has asked Apple to help Russia block Telegram.
