Trump says North Korea 'no longer a nuclear threat'

China is firmly committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and it is also necessary to address the DPRK's reasonable security concerns at an appropriate time, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in May.

It was made by the Choson Sinbo, a pro-Pyongyang mouthpiece in Japan that normally faithfully reproduces the party line. Much of the text repeated vows to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. A bilateral deal in 1994 collapsed when Washington accused Pyongyang of secretly enriching uranium, while a six-nation agreement in 2005 fell apart in a dispute over how to verify a nuclear freeze by the North.

North Korea's state media has reported that Mr Trump has "expressed his intention" to lift crippling sanctions against the country - despite the USA president saying that they will remain until "nukes are no longer a factor".

The joint statement signed at the end of their historic summit in Singapore gave few details on how either goal would be achieved but Trump fleshed out some details at a news conference.

Pompeo, who flew to Seoul to brief South Korean leaders, said the brief, four-point joint statement that emerged from the summit did not encapsulate all the progress the USA and North Korea had made. But the two countries didn't nail down how and when the North might denuclearize or shed light on the unspecified "protections" Trump pledged to Kim and his government.

But the U.S. president trumpeted the outcome as a "deal" with North Korea and vowed there would be "no more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research!"

Pompeo arrived in Seoul on Wednesday evening after accompanying Trump to the historic summit with Kim in Singapore on Tuesday. Trump said he would invite Kim to the White House "at the appropriate time" and that Kim had already accepted the not-yet-extended invitation.

While expressing cautious optimism about events of the past 48 hours, Bishop stressed the strength of the agreement between Trump and Kim Jong-un "will only be as good as the verification process that North Korea allows".

North Korean TV's most famous newsreader Ri Chun Hee, also known as the "Pink Lady", announced the results of the Trump-Kim summit on Wednesday at 4 a.m. ET, specifically highlighting Trump's "intention to halt the U.S".

"The world will see a major change", the North Korean leader said.

The Facts: Trump is wrong to suggest North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat.

On Tuesday, just after Trump's surprise announcement, a spokesman for US Forces Korea said they had not received any instruction to cease joint military drills. "It is up to the United States and South Korea to decide about their joint exercises".

Is anything out of reach after historic summit with North Korea?
He also spoke of how happy he was that Trump had agreed to meeting with Kim, which no US president has done before. At a news conference wrapping up the summit, Trump told reporters he and Kim "have developed a very special bond".
