Kane able to give England late victory at World Cup

England captain Harry Kane scored twice including a stoppage-time victor as he led his side to a last-gasp 2-1 win over Tunisia in their opening World Cup match.

England will be very confident of beating Panama - who qualified for just their first World Cup this summer - but Kane is expecting a very hard match.

TRT World's Lance Santos has more.

"We created a lot of clear-cut chances in the first half, as many as I can remember us having", said Southgate after England had six shots on target, reportedly their most in a half of World Cup football since the 1966 semi-final against Portugal.

"For him I am personally delighted but I know the pride he will feel in leading his country to victory tonight will be the biggest for him", said Southgate.

Rose, on the other hand, is a natural left-footer with no problems finding a cross with his left boot, and he's also become accustomed to finding Harry Kane and Dele Alli in particular after spending the last few seasons playing alongside them for Tottenham. Yet on that corner in injury time, he found space at the far post to place a ideal header between Farouk Ben Mustapha (who replaced an injured Hassen in goal in the first half) and his post.

"Harry is a top, top striker", Southgate said.

Pure emotion from captain Kane as his brace gives England three valuable points.

Tunisia v England – FIFA World Cup 2018 – Group G – Volgograd Arena
Tunisia were the opposition for England in their opener

England's forthcoming opponent Panama was beaten 3-0 by Belgium in its opening game but Southgate warned his players not to underestimate Hernan Dario Gomez's team. Hopefully when they watch it back they can get it right for the next game.

Players from both sides, but particularly those from England, spent an undue amount of time trying to ward them off during the match.

A cricket score had looked on the cards early on as England ran the North Africans ragged.

Tunisia were handed a controversial first half penalty as Kyle Walker was adjudged to have fouled Fakhreddine Ben Youssef, with VAR confirming the decision that handed the underdogs an undeserved first half equaliser. "That's what these games are about - it's a World Cup - you go until the last second and I'm absolutely buzzing". But England struggled to finish it off.

England's players later thought they deserved the same verdict when Kane was grappled to the ground twice by Tunisians on either side of the halftime break.

Yet just as it looked set to end as a draw, the England captain nodded home to secure a 2-1 win that he hopes will make the "people in the pubs back home proud". "We all had bug spray on and it was important as some of them went in your eyes, some in your mouth, but it is about dealing with what comes your way". "At the end the pressure built and built".

"We've done it for a while [had good resilience] since the gaffer has been here - he's instilled it into us".
