Woman's selfies capture moving lump on face: a parasite

Indeed, the Russian woman had the worm removed and made a full recovery, the report said.

But surprisingly, the Russian woman's case is not one in a million, as cases of people getting infected by parasitic worms are becoming increasingly common in the recent times.

For two weeks, the woman snapped pictures as the blemish traveled leaving bumps just above her eye as it made its way down her face to her lip, causing her mouth to swell. Five days later, it migrated to above her left eye and then after 10 days, it crawled to her upper lip.

According to a 2014 study of more than 200 cases of D. repens infection in Russian Federation (which were documented over a 17-year period), doctors observed the worm moving in about 35 percent of patients.

Doctors diagnosed a woman with a parasitic worm after she discovered a lump moving across her face. It took two weeks before she chose to get the lump examined by doctors.

Here's something uncomfortable to think about: A worm moving around under the skin on your face. This organism usually finds it hard for breeding when human beings become the host through mosquito bites.

Merkel faces ultimatum from ally over migrants
A European solution "doesn't convince me", said Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Soeder in a June 14 Bild Zeitung interview . If Seehofer were to defy her and go ahead with his plans on Monday, Merkel would nearly certainly be forced to fire him.

While the definitive hosts for this parasite are dogs and other carnivores, the report stated that humans can be "aberrant hosts".

"A physical examination showed a superficial moving oblong nodule at the left upper eyelid", reads the case report.

The parasite, which was removed surgically, was a Dirofilaria repens. In humnans, D. repens usually manifests as either a wandering worm in the subcutaneous tissue or a granulomatous nodule, although there are reports of pulmonary dirofilariasis with this species. However, luckily, these worms can nearly never reproduce in humans, and all symptoms usually disappear quickly if the worm is removed - so if you've noticed any odd lumps moving around your body after a mosquito bite, you should probably get to a doctor.

The woman reported having no other symptoms. The mosquitoes that tend to inject these parasites through their bites are generally found in certain regions of Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Once under a human's skin, the worm, which is spread by mosquito bites, can not breed.

The woman in the latest case also happened to visit a rural area outside of Moscow, Russia.
