Bali shuts airport after volcanic eruption, SE Asia News & Top Stories

Indonesian authorities shut Bali's global airport for a second time in seven months as a fresh eruption Thursday at Mount Agung near the popular tourist island sent volcanic ashes several miles high into the sky.

Its last major eruption in 1963 killed around 1,600 people.

Mount Agung volcano erupts during the night, as seen from Datah village, Karangasem Regency in Bali, Indonesia on June 29, 2018.

Mount Agung has been spewing clouds of ash up to 2,500 metres into the air since Wednesday. Volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines, clog fuel and cooling systems, and affect visibility.

The Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar will be shut on Friday until 7pm (local time), airport operator Angkasa Pura and the country's disaster agency said. It said almost 450 flights were cancelled, affecting 75,000 people.

Talking more about the Volcano eruption, the regional volcanic ash advisory centre in Australia's Darwin said that in the coming days winds could carry the ash southwest toward Java which is popularly known for Indonesia's most densely island. In December, minor explosive eruptions closed the airport. Authorities lowered its alert status from the highest level in February.
