First Lady Melania Trump returns to border state amid separation outcry

Melania Trump has visited a detention centre for a second time, to observe children brought across the Mexico-US border illegally by their parents.

Grisham told reporters that Mrs. Trump "shares her opinions and thoughts about family unification with the president directly and that he supported and urged her to make today's trip".

She did not wear the jacket Thursday.

The decision provoked a storm of criticism and speculation as to whether it was directed at anyone from her husband, to the media to the children to no one at all, and spawned copy-cat jackets from people saying they did care.

The first lady had pressured her husband to change his hardline approach after images of distraught immigrant children dominated headlines in the United States and overseas.

The first lady met with Border Patrol officials soon after landing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, where she said she was looking forward to touring the Border Patrol's facility in Tucson.

During her visit to Tucson on Thursday, she said her interest in the roiling immigration issue centers on the children caught up in the system.

Oil prices rise as OPEC meets
That would effectively mean a boost from producers such as Saudi Arabia that have voluntarily cut more deeply than planned. Russia, which isn't a member of OPEC but has gained influence in the oil group, wants an increase of 1.5 million bpd.

Sessions and others in the Trump administration have defended the new border policy in recent weeks even as thousands of children were taken from their parents and placed in migrant shelters. "She's advocating for quality care for these children under hard circumstances", Stephanie Grisham, Melania's communications director, explained.

"We've really prevented instances of human trafficking where someone show up claiming to be a family unit and then we find out that the children are in no way", he said, "not even a close relation to the adult in custody".

Grisham said the first lady "really wants to learn" about the border processes making news around the world.

Police repeatedly warned several dozen demonstrators on Campbell Avenue to stay on the sidewalk as they gathered in front of the Southwest Key facility housing migrant children.

Anticipating a possible trip to Phoenix, protesters also gathered outside a Southwest Key facility in the city's west side.

Over the past two months, about 2,300 children have been separated from their parents in Trump's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal crossing of the Mexican border. Federal officials were struggling to reunite children with their parents, some of whom were already deported. It's not clear yet how the administration will meet the deadline.
