These Are The Four Charges Handed To Najib Today At Court

Former Malaysian leader Najib Razak has been charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust after billions of dollars went missing from the state.

The former prime minister of Malaysia has been arrested amid an investigation into allegations of massive corruption.

- Najib unexpectedly loses election to Dr Mahathir, who immediately reopens probe into 1MDB.

He was arrested Tuesday by anti-graft officials over a suspicious transfer of 42 million ringgit ($15.3 million) into his bank accounts from SRC International, a former unit of the 1MDB state investment fund that U.S. investigators say was looted of billions by associates of Najib.

The scandal is now the subject of money laundering investigations in six counties including the USA.

Malaysia's new prime minister Mohamad Mahathir said in June that there was an "almost perfect" case against Najib's role in the 1MDB scandal, but proving the case is not set to be easy.

U.S. authorities allege that a total of more than $4.5bn was stolen from 1MDB by high-level officials and their associates between 2009 and 2015.

Najib and the fund deny any wrongdoing.

The case will be transferred to the High Court where Najib is expected to make his plea Wednesday.

"I have done my best, but I realized it is not enough".

A security source told AFP that agents from the MACC arrested Najib at his home, a sprawling mansion in a well-heeled suburb of Kuala Lumpur.

Some of Najib's children were present in the court room, including his stepson Riza Aziz who on Tuesday was questioned by anti- graft officers in connection with their 1MDB probe.

However, Tommy Thomas said the press should consult with independent lawyers on the full effects of the interim order secured by Najib's counsel, Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah.

The US Justice Department, which is seeking to recover items allegedly bought with stolen 1MDB cash in America, estimates that $4.5 billion in total was looted from 1MDB. Following the stateside investigation, Red Granite earlier this year agreed to pay back $60M to the US government but has denied any intentional wrongdoing.

- Authorities say over 400 bank accounts frozen, including those of 81 individuals and 55 companies believed to have received funds from 1MDB.

United States prosecutors had previously said a person described as "Malaysian Official 1" had received more than $1bn from 1MDB.
