Comcast Xfinity Mobile will throttle your hotspot speeds and lower video resolution

Comcast is making some changes to their Xfinity Mobile wireless connection plan. "First, we're establishing 480p as the default resolution for streaming video over cellular data on Xfinity Mobile, which is consistent with standard unlimited plans across carriers".

There is a way to work around this for now, though. The operator added that, later this year, it will allow customers to pay extra to stream video at 720p resolution.

Specifically, Comcast plans to implement a 480p video quality cap for cellular connections, down from the previous 720p quality cap. You can continue to stream HD-quality video over WiFi, including at millions of Xfinity WiFi hotspots. Alternatively, you can speak with your wallet and take your service to another carrier that does allow HD streaming over its mobile network.

One Comcast customer forwarded the email to Ars, and there's also a Reddit thread discussing the email. The new limitations have been placed on maximum video quality and hotspot speeds that customers can access when they're on cellular data. Xfinity Mobile users can get 4G hotspot speeds by switching to Comcast's "By the Gig" pricing.

In addition, subscribers to its unlimited data plan get throttled to 3G speeds when acting as a hotspot for another device.

German coalition teeters as minister offers to resign over migrants
Mr Seehofer leads the Christian Social Union (CSU), the Bavarian sister party of Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU). All new migrants would have to be screened at the centers and determined if they are eligible to seek asylum in Germany.

If you are a Comcast mobile subscriber and aren't OK with this change, you can contact Comcast and request an upgrade to 720p video.

Their speeds will drop to 1.5Mbps download and 750kbps upload after those on the unlimited plan use more than 20GB of data in a month.

Comcast announced that it's taking some steps to slow down data consumption for its Xfinity Mobile customers. By the Gig costs $12 for every whole gigabyte allocated. Instead, its Xfinity Mobile services essentially piggyback on top of Verizon's network, and Comcast handles other elements of the service itself, such as phone sales and billing. The major wireless carriers have imposed various video and hotspot limits on their mobile networks without being punished by the Federal Communications Commission.

On the 600kbps tethering limit, Comcast told customers, "At this speed, you'll conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20GB threshold, but you'll still be able to do numerous online activities you enjoy".
