Carmelo Anthony, Oklahoma City Thunder will part ways this summer

In case you have been living under a rock, or earning your wage while shoveling mud or something noble, a report emerged on Friday, laying claim that the Thunder and Carmelo Anthony are about to split up this summer. As the franchise sifts through a $310 million payroll and luxury tax bill, the front office and Melo reportedly have a mutual agreement that his limited role with the team isn't what he had agreed to when signing with OKC, sources tell the site. According to ESPN, an agreement has been reached between Anthony's reps and the Thunder to split this summer.

The Lakers, who are in need of veteran leadership in a youthful locker room, could be a good fit for Anthony, while also allowing the 34-year-old to play with James during his first season in LA. Here are eight viable options.

Anthony's pending departure from Oklahoma City has seemed obvious for a few months now, though it became even clearer when the Thunder and prized free agent Paul George agreed to a four-year, $137 million contract at the start of free agency.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reports the Houston Rockets will pursue Anthony if he's bought out. With the amount of money the Thunder have committed to other players on the roster, shedding the $27.9 million Anthony is owed on the final year of his contract - by trading him, stretching his contract or buying him out, as Wojnarowski notes - could save Oklahoma City as much as $100 million next season. He is owed $27.9 million next season.

"I don't think I can be effective as that type of player", he said. The Thunder, who lost to the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs, traded forward Doug McDermott, big man Enes Kanter and the Chicago Bulls' 2018 second-round pick to the New York Knicks for him this past September.
