Only 150-200 displaced Syrians remained near the Naseeb crossing on Monday, UN official Anders Peterson told Jordanian state news on Sunday.

A member of the Free Syrian Army in southern Syria, who requested anonymity, rejected accusations that rebels accepted "a surrenderist deal" worked out by the Russians, but stressed that the deal was to avoid more bloodshed and protect civilians.

An AFP correspondent on the edge of rebel-held parts of Daraa city, the divided provincial capital, said the bombing was the heaviest since the launch of the Russian-backed offensive on June 19.

"I commend Jordan for generously providing protection to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees since the beginning of the crisis and for providing and facilitating assistance to those in need inside Syria", he said.

The army, which had deployed more armoured vehicles in the area, has set in motion "contingency plans to face any eventuality" as the Syrian government offensive closes in on the Nasib crossing, diplomatic sources said.

Israel's military said it had hit a Syrian army post in that area.

Israel has repeatedly said that it will not allow Iran to establish a foothold in Syria and has conducted numerous air raids over the past year targeting Iranian assets in Syria.

The crossing, a key trade route, was held by opposition groups almost for three years.

It has also been agreed to resume the work of Syrian government bodies on the territories controlled by armed groups, and on the return of Syrian refugees to their homes from the Jordanian border.

The Syrian government forces retook a security checkpoint along the Jordanian border for the first time in more than three years.

The rebels will surrender their heavy weapons in exchange for the partial withdrawal of government forces from the area, the observatory added.

Osama Al Homsi, 26, said he was hesitant to return to his hometown of Jeeza in southeastern Daraa after the deal.

In one village, Saida, there were few residents two days after Syrian soldiers captured it from the rebels.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, said at least 28,000 people had returned in the past day to towns in eastern Deraa covered under the truce deal.

After last week's settlement, only an Islamic State (IS) affiliate in the Yarmouk Basin, a valley nestled between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Jordan, and a collection of rebel factions in northwestern Daraa province have yet to reconcile with Damascus.

For the anti-Assad rebels, losing the southwest will reduce their territory to a region of the northwest bordering Turkey and a patch of desert in the east where USA forces are stationed near the border with Iraq and Jordan.

Syria's war has killed 350,000 people and displaced millions of others since it started with the brutal repression of anti-Assad protests in 2011.
