Gareth Southgate has nation preparing for Waistcoat Wednesday

Gareth Southgate believes his heroes have the power to unite England by securing a place in the World Cup final.

He might only be the third man ever to guide England to the last four of a World Cup but due to his sartorial elegance he will also go down as the man who revived the waistcoat from the wastelands of fashion.

"We've won after scoring in the last minute, won after conceding in the last minute, come through extra time and penalties". Biggest win in the tournament. Croatia lost their only previous semi-final match to host France in 1998.

Gareth Southgate and his waistcoat-wearing antics has done absolute wonders for Marks and Spencers.

Yet, while some suggested prior to the World Cup that such a situation would be a hindrance, it has been anything but, and Southgate has been keen to get across that the players are on the precipice of untouchable status.

Two years ago England crashed out of the European Championship in the first knockout round with a 2-1 defeat by Iceland after an abysmal performance.

"Our country has been though some hard moments in terms of unity and sport has the power to do that, and football in particular", he said.

Colombia Football Federation Post Respectful Tweet Following England Defeat
TV images showed Maradona wildly celebrating Colombia's late equalizer that took Tuesday's Round of 16 match to 1-1 and extra time.

On the note of TVs, whilst we're now used to HD, Ultra-HD and 4K, back in 1990 things were very different.

Asked what is was all about, a slightly bemused Southgate said: "That's exactly what I asked our fitness coach a well, 'What is that all about?'". Everyone has been out on the streets celebrating what we've achieved and that is a great source of pride for us.

"You're always conscious of those who have helped you, and my parents before them... those who were there for you in hard times, as well as when things were going well".

"I think it's good the players understand it's a big moment for the country".

As the hysteria back home following Saturday's quarter-final win proves, so are the rest of us - and long may it continue, well, for at least another week.

"This generation has been underrated due to their results but they've had the quality and now they are showing it".
