10 months after baby, Serena in Wimbledon final vs. Kerber

It's possible that that match and that year were turning points in Kerber's career as she found Grand Slam glory soon in 2016 at the Australian Open where she beat Azarenka for the first time, in the quarter-finals, and Serena in the final.

Just 10-and-a-half months since giving birth to her first child, Williams did the unthinkable and stormed her way to the final of the grass-court Grand Slam. The 36-year-old Williams is already a legend, but what she did at Wimbledon this year is nothing short of extraordinary.

"I think without 2017 I couldn't win this tournament", Kerber, who will rise back to world number four, told reporters.

But Williams' physical achievements - reaching the final of Wimbledon in her fourth tournament back following a 13-month maternity leave - are appreciated particularly by women who know firsthand the sacrifice required to compete at the top level of tennis and handle the demands of motherhood. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

Serena Williams's pursuit of an eighth Wimbledon title was denied in convincing fashion by the hard-hitting patience and precision of Angelique Kerber, one of just five women to have beaten Williams in a Grand Slam final before Saturday. I think that's what I was doing in the past, I was limiting myself.

She needed surgery and was bed-bound for weeks, but Williams has managed to overcome those hard days and resume her tennis career.

Feature: Syrian flag finds way back to main border crossing with Jordan
The Syrian government forces retook a security checkpoint along the Jordanian border for the first time in more than three years. Osama Al Homsi, 26, said he was hesitant to return to his hometown of Jeeza in southeastern Daraa after the deal.

She had not faced anyone with the pedigree of the German though and was outmanoeuvred in the first set as Kerber's dogged defence forced too many errors. The tennis player also dedicated her effort to all of the mothers out there.

The usual 2 p.m. start time was pushed back as Novak Djokovic's and Rafael Nadal's semifinal was played to a finish having been carried over from Friday.

"I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best". However, her efforts were not enough to reverse the course of the game as the tenacious Kerber regained her composure to seal a 6-3 win in the opening set.

The first three Grand Slams of the year in women's singles have been won by three different European women. Anderson played for more than 6 1/2 hours Friday before getting past John Isner in a 26-24 fifth set; it's the second-longest match in Grand Slam history. She struggled with her movement, and her serve, as evidence by the fact she lost 4 of 9 service games and just 34% of return points, while also firing 24 errors.

"I tried but Angelique played really well".

Toward the end, a reporter asked Williams how she'd turn her defeat into a happy story for her daughter.
