 Eighth Audubon Zoo animal dies following jaguar attack

WDSU in New Orleans reports that the Audubon Zoo is closed Saturday after an adult male jaguar reportedly escaped from its habitat and killed six animals. He mauled four alpacas, one emu and one fox in nearby habitats before being sedated by a vet team almost an hour after his escape, the zoo said. Three others animals were also injured. However, no humans were injured as the incident occurred before the zoo had opened to the public.

An "after action review" is taking place to determine how the killer cat got free.

"We take this situation very seriously and we're working to investigate everything that happened so we could prevent anything like this from happening again " Burks said.

He added: 'Nothing's going to happen to the jaguar itself. Staff members believe the jaguar may have slipped through a compromised section of his enclosure's roof.

The Audubon Zoo plans to investigate how the jaguar was able to escape.

According to the zoo's website, jaguars are the largest felines in the Americas, and the third largest in the world, known for their powerful bite. "This is by far the biggest tragedy we've had".

But he said staff were devastated about the killed animals.

Grief counselors have been brought in to help the staff deal with the loss.

Ron Forman, the president and chief executive of the zoo, said Saturday's series of attacks was the worst in the zoo's history, but told the public the Audubon Zoo was still safe. It is situated in Uptown New Orleans, between Audubon Park and the Mississippi River.
