European Union antitrust regulators fine Google record US$5 billion

The European Union slapped Google with a huge 4.34-billion-euro fine for abusing the dominance of its Android operating system on Wednesday in the biggest antitrust penalty in the bloc's history.

But it's not going to be easy to just ditch Android, and one of Bloomberg's sources actually suggests the company may not be that serious about the idea - calling it a "senior-engineer retention project" created to keep Google's talent busy so they don't go and join rival companies.

The president tweeted: "I told you so! They truly have taken advantage of the US, but not for long!"

President Trump has been calling on the European Union to renegotiate trade deals, which would be fair to both the US and other nation states.

The president is due to conduct crunch talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the White House next week, where he could choose to bring up the Google fine again.

In the end, the Commission found that Google violated European Union antitrust laws and has given the company 90 days to clean up its act.

Two former antitrust enforcers said it was unusual but not unheard of for officials to comment on decisions by enforcers in other jurisdictions.

Trump favors improving US, UK ties with Russian Federation and China
Trump said he respects Europe's leaders but adds that they've taken advantage of the USA on trade and defense spending. His grandfather Frederick Trump was born in Germany. "I don't think you'll have any, 'Gee, I did it".

"If phone makers and mobile network operators couldn't include our apps on their wide range of devices, it would upset the balance of the Android ecosystem".

Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, has defended the company's decision to bundle the apps with the operating system, stating in a blog post, that Android users were free to remove any pre-installed apps.

The Commission opened its investigation into Android following a 2013 complaint from lobbying group FairSearch, which was backed by competitors including Oracle, Nokia and Microsoft.

Google's parent company Alphabet ranked as the fifth largest information technology company in the world in 2017, with global revenue of $111 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Google also countered the EU's statement which said that the tech giant has prevented manufacturers wishing to pre-install Google apps by saying that it's easy to remove a preloaded app and replace it with an alternative.

A year ago eMarketer forecast almost $50billion would be made by Google in 2017 from mobile ad revenue.
