UK's new Brexit envoy optimistic, as EU warns of Brexit crash

While praising May's "courage and resilience", Johnson said her Chequers plan would see the United Kingdom in "miserable limbo".

The MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip resigned last week days after Cabinet ministers signed up to the PM's Chequers plan.

The government last night defeated a bid to change it's EU customs union strategy by 307 to 301.

Britain's former foreign secretary Boris Johnson used a stinging resignation speech on Wednesday to tell members of parliament that it was "not too late to save Brexit" but stopped short of a leadership challenge to Theresa May's battered premiership.

The amendment would have required the government to try to negotiate a customs union arrangement with the EU if, by January 21, 2019, it had failed to negotiate a frictionless free trade deal with the bloc.

May has risked a leadership contest after the so-called Chequers deal for a post-Brexit Britain that would see the United Kingdom abiding by European Union rules in return for free trade.

"If the PM can fix that vision once again before us then I believe she can deliver a great Brexit for Britain", he added.

"We can't rely on anything", said Warren East, CEO of United Kingdom engine maker Rolls Royce, who said that his firm could start stockpiling parts soon if it looked like Britain was heading towards a disorderly exit from the EU.

There were also testy exchanges between the prime minister and Mr Corbyn, who sought to put pressure on Mrs May over the official Brexit campaign being referred to the police for breaches of electoral law.

On Monday, May infuriated lawmakers who wanted to keep the closest possible ties with the European Union when she made a decision to accept a number of demands by hardline pro-Brexit members.

The representative for Shipley said he had lost trust that Mrs May would deliver Brexit after the Chequers white paper, which proposes locking the United Kingdom to all European Union (EU) rules on goods and is unpopular with the public.

"A fog of self-doubt has descended", he said.

But this is set to change because of Brexit, and the agency is moving to a new headquarters in Amsterdam following a pan-European competition and voting process late past year.

"I think so today".

Johnson, to a chorus of "hear, hear" that required the Speaker to issue a warning, said the Northern Ireland border issue had become "so politically charged as to dominate the debate".

Anna Soubry's comments yesterday mirrored my suggestion previous year - that those sensible MPs - from all parties - who have been voting against the Tory Government and the Labour front bench consistently since the referendum could come together in that window after a vote of no confidence, and apply our efforts at an executive level as well as on votes in the chamber.

Pressure on the Prime Minister continued to mount as a poll gave Labour a five-point lead over the Conservatives.

Explaining that the two states already have the same rules and laws, the Tory MP told the BBC: "The only reason we wouldn't come to a free and open agreement is because politics gets in the way of economics".
