Thunder ship off Carmelo Anthony in multi-team trade

Carmelo Anthony has been traded to Atlanta, but don't expect to see him suiting up for the Hawks next season.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Carmelo Anthony has been traded along with a 2022 1st-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for point guard Dennis Schroder and big man Mike Muscala, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Multiple reports have surfaced indicating that the Rockets are considered the front-runners to sign Anthony, especially with his good friend Chris Paul having some influence on Houston's front office. In Game 6 of the first-round series against Utah that ended Oklahoma City's season, he played fewer minutes than reserve Jerami Grant.

His one and only season with the Thunder was underwhelming for Anthony.

The 6-foot-1 Schroder averaged 19.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game last season for the Hawks, starting all 67 games he played. The 76ers will send third-year wing Justin Anderson to Atlanta to complete the deal. But after Paul missed the last two games of the Western Conference finals against the Warriors, Houston's offense bogged down at the worst possible times - most notably the second half of Game 7, when the Rockets missed a seemingly impossible 27 consecutive 3-point attempts.

Though a waive and stretch would have created considerable savings, the $9 million Anthony would have been owed for the next three seasons would have been "dead money". The Thunder is projected to zoom past that number, though it's likely it will waive and stretch Kyle Singler's contract and replace him with someone on a minimum deal, which would save Oklahoma City another $14 million or so.

For the Hawks, this deal allows them to get out of Schroder's contract and commit to Trae Young at point guard while adding a possible future first-rounder. But it was clear that the top priorities were getting Schroder out of the mix and picking up a decent draft pick, both of which they did.
