Sony IMX586 promises to put 48 effective megapixels in phones

The IMX586 has the "industry's highest pixel count" with 48 megapixels, bettering high-end cameras like its own A7R III, all squeezed into a phone-sized 8.0 mm diagonal unit. This all means that in those low-light situations imaging data from four adjacent pixels is being added in order to achieve sensitivity comparable to that of 1.6 μm pixels. The company has come up with a new sensor for smartphones.

If you're using a relatively recent iPhone, then you're using a Sony sensor when you take a photograph and the Japanese company has today announced a new version of that sensor, this time pushing the resolution higher than ever.

One of the "world's first" claims on the new sensor is that it has the smallest pixels - at 0.8µm.

Manchester United Ready To Launch £65m Bid To Sign World Cup Star
Maguire has forged a reputation as one of the Premier League's best ball-playing defenders during his time at Hull and Leicester. Anthony Martial has been told he can leave Manchester United - but only for the right club and the right price.

The Sony IMX586 is equipped with Quad Bayer colour filter array that offers 2×2 pixels in the same colour for higher sensitivity shooting. The Sony IMX586 48-megapixel sensor is expected to arrive in future smartphones soon for better daylight photos that render great detail. To circumvent this problem, the IMX586 sensor uses a Quad Bayer color filter array that bins 2x2 adjacent pixels to provide light sensitivity equivalent to what a 12 MP sensor with a 1.6 micron pixel size can provide.

For bright low-noise photos and videos when shooting at night. Sony exposure control and signal processing functionality are integrated into the sensor to allow real-time output and superior dynamic range that is four times greater than conventional products. Even scenes with both bright and dark areas can be captured with minimal highlight blowout or loss of detail in shadows while viewing the image on the smartphone display.

Sony will start shipping samples of the IMX586 camera sensor in September 2018, which means that the first smartphones sporting this sensor are expected to ship in early 2019.
