Israeli Navy Hijacks 'Freedom Flotilla' Attempting to Break Gaza Blockade

Freedom Flotilla organisers said that the boat had been "hijacked" and "seized" and that the ship had earlier received a warning from the navy before the interception.

"The continued Israeli attacks against occupied Jerusalem will increase tensions and will drag the region into a religious war that we have long warned against", Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' office said in a statement. The group said the supplies were "a small but important contribution to the increasingly dire medical situation" in Gaza.

Almost 20 activists from several countries were arrested by Israeli soldiers who boarded the ship and remained jailed on Tuesday, with two of them launching a hunger strike to protest the Israeli military action against them.

The flotilla was organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an umbrella of organizations aiming to end the closure of Gaza, and set sail from the Danish port of Copenhagen.

Unite national secretary Gerard Hehir said Mr Treen was on a "peaceful mission" to deliver medicine and was "attached and detained" by Israeli forces.

The IDF confirmed that it had intercepted the boat and was towing it to the nearby Ashdod port. "It is such a gross violation of worldwide law that it can be characterised as a crime against humanity", participant Mikkel Grüner, a Danish national who is city councillor in Bergen, Norway, said at the time the flotilla set sail.

Maguire has forged a reputation as one of the Premier League's best ball-playing defenders during his time at Hull and Leicester. Anthony Martial has been told he can leave Manchester United - but only for the right club and the right price.

Two incidents this year saw the Israeli navy stop Gaza fishing boats attempting to break out of the blockade rather than into it, with the intention of seeking medical assistance. However, the first democratically government of Palestine was not recognised by United States and Israel.

By far, the biggest flotilla to sail for Gaza was in 2010, when six ships sailed for Gaza headed by the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish-registered vessel.

"So two boats are now currently making their way toward the Gaza Strip", he said.

Under Israel's restrictive policy, Palestinians are not allowed to leave or enter the Gaza Strip.

"The Israeli navy claims our ship is breaking global law and threatens that they will use "any measures necessary" to stop us", it said.

The territory is home to 2 million Palestinians, mainly the stateless descendants of people who fled or were driven out of what is now Israel at its founding in 1948. In the past, mechanical failures have affected previous flotilla attempts, with allegations Israel may have tampered with the ships.
