Austin-Based 3D-Printable Guns Meet Opposition From 21 States - And Trump

President Donald Trump on Tuesday raised concerns about the sale of plastic guns made with 3-D printers, a day after several US states sued his administration to block online publication of designs to make weapons that security screening may not detect. A judge in Seattle granted the injunction Tuesday after eight U.S. states and the District of Columbia argued that criminals and terrorists would use the blueprints to make untraceable, undetectable plastic weapons.

Eight Democratic attorneys general, including New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the federal government's settlement with Defense Distributed that makes the plans available online.

The hard-to-trace plastic weapons allow easy access to weapons for terrorists and unsafe criminals and threaten public safety.

Cuomo said he will pursue legislation to bolster the state's gun safety laws and outlaw private production of all 3D and so-called "ghost guns" that are untraceable and invisible to metal detectors.

8 states file suit against the Trump administration over its decision to allow Defense Distributed to publish downloadable blueprints for guns; Anita Vogel reports on the case.

In 2013, Defense Distributed posted a YouTube video demonstrating what it said was a Liberator pistol made from 3D-printed parts. Models for the AR-15, the second-most popular firearm, had been downloaded more than 3,000 times.

"Our Constitution's First Amendment secures the right of all people to engage in truthful speech, including by sharing information contained in books, paintings and files". The decision blocked a settlement President Donald Trump's administration had reached with a Texas-based company, which initially said it planned to put files online on Wednesday.

But gun rights advocates, like Ben Hertel, who manages Rocklin Armory, disagree.

"I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public", the president said.

"Coming to a theater near you, coming to a school near you, these ghost guns are the new wave of American gun violence", said Connecticut Sen. The judge issued a temporary restraining order and scheduled another hearing on the subject for August 10.

Forge Jax says they've never made 3D printed guns and they will stick to other 3D prototypes. They say anyone following those step-by-step directions could use 3-D printer technology to create a gun out of plastic.

3D printed guns generally fall apart after a couple of shots.

"The judge's rule is clear", Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a news conference. He understands concerns about the guns' ability to be detected, but laws already make it illegal for people to possess undetectable guns.

"We are disappointed by the court's ruling, which imposes a global prior restraint on free speech", Blackman said.

Eight US states and the District of Columbia sued, arguing the blueprints could allow anyone - from a teen to a "lone wolf" gunman - to make untraceable, undetectable plastic weapons.
