Smoking banned in public housing nationwide, effective today

Starting Tuesday, July 31, smoking will be prohibited in public housing across Tennessee and the U.S.

The ban also prohibits smoking in areas up to 25 feet away from public housing units and administrative office buildings, according to a brochure from the department.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development made the ruling back of February of past year and provided an 18-month implementation period.

Housing and Urban Development says this new ban creates healthy environments that encourage people who smoke to quit or attempt to reduce smoking. NYCHA and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene officials launched the new smoke-free policy Monday morning. HUD also states that banning smoking from public housing facilities will save an estimated $497 million in health care costs for families and maintenance costs for housing authorities.

Demi Lovato still 'very, very sick' and suffering 'complications'
According to the source, the plan is to get Lovato into treatment when she's released from the hospital. Last week it was reported that Lovato's overdose symptoms were so severe, her life was in danger.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently conducted research that found most multi-unit housing residents had smoke-free homes, but almost one-third of those residents said cigarette smoke from other areas of the building often entered their apartments. New Yorkers can lose their apartment if they violate the smoking ban.

Lewis said the federal smoke-free policy only applies to roughly 2,600 MHA units the agency owns and operates and not to the Section 8 voucher program.

Because the rule is a part of tenant's leases, residents of Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority communities must sign a lease addendum between July 20 and July 30. Residents had 18 months to adhere to the new policy.
