Tampa Mother Who Dropped Daughter In River To Remain In Jail

A bible-wielding mother drove a stolen auto into a river, then deliberately tossed her screaming four year-old daughter into its waters to drown, police say.

She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital. It is believed that the woman who threw the child from the bridge is the mother of the girl. "Roughly halfway across the river, she tossed the child and began wading out", police added.

Tampa police say the woman, Shakayla Denson, 26, was arrested on several charges, including first-degree felony murder in the death of her daughter, Je'Hyrah Daniels.

Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan, calling this crime a "completely tragic event", said that authorities are short on answers right now when it comes to a possible motive. "It's a insane world we live in", Dugan said.

Denson, authorities say, first stole a vehicle from a local auto shop and then drove to the water with her daughter.

A GoFundMe page that was created by Denson in October 2017 stated Je'Hyrah was diagnosed with autism, the report said. At about 4:30 p.m., a member of the Tampa Police dive team found the unconscious girl submerged about 75 feet offshore.

Denson has previous arrests for driving with a suspended license and theft charges dating back two years ago.

WFLA reported that Denson then allegedly grabbed her daughter with both arms and pulled her tight against her chest as she walked deeper into the river and let the girl go.

"Our diver, when he found her, he brought her lifeless body to shore and handed her over to Fire Rescue and they took her.to St. Joe's", Dugan told reporters, his voice slightly cracking.

"Our hearts hurt for the loss of Je'Hyrah Daniels".

Neighbor Shantia Little told the Tampa Bay Times that Denson would frequently leave Je'Hyrah and a young niece and nephew alone in her apartment.
