Row over burial site for Karunanidhi; DMK moves Madras HC

Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK President Karunanidhi has passed away a little while ago after his health further deteriorated after he was admitted to hospital more than a week ago.

Karunanidhi, who led his party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for about 50 years, was in hospital since July 26 for age-related ailments including urinary tract infections.

Karunanidhi, a charismatic self-styled champion of the poor, had been in intensive care since July 28 in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

The controversy erupted after the state government rejected the DMK's demand for allotting space for Karunanidhi's burial on the Marina beach, instead offering space near the memorials to former chief ministers Chakravarty Rajagopalachari and K. Kamraj at Guindy.

The death of the DMK patriarch was mourned by several leaders including the Prime Minister and United States Ambassador for India Ken Juster.

Some reports said the government was reluctant about allotting space for Karunanidhi's burial at the Marina as he was not a sitting chief minister.

Demi Lovato still 'very, very sick' and suffering 'complications'
According to the source, the plan is to get Lovato into treatment when she's released from the hospital. Last week it was reported that Lovato's overdose symptoms were so severe, her life was in danger.

In recent times, Karunanidhi and DMK achieved infamy for their alleged role in the 2G scam.

His son and DMK working president M K Stalin called on Chief Minister K Palaniswami at his residence and was closeted with him for some time, officials said. Karunanidhi is considered as the leader who has always been concerned about his party and its people. He outshone many a celebrity, as he presided over the destiny of the Dravidian state along with his tinsel town co-travellers and arch rivals in politics - MG Ramachandran and his protegee J Jayalalithaa - for decades. Since then he continues to be monitored by a team of specialists, reported PTI.

Politics and literature are both a crucial part of M Karunanidhi's life.

The same year he parted with 50% of the seats to the Congress in the Assembly elections but the alliance was not fruitful and MGR won. The TMC came to power in the state.

However the latest statement from the Tamil Nadu Government has denied the request of the DMK leader's family which was also his dying wish.

Stalin has appealed to his party worker to maintain peace.
