Pence lays out plans for Trump's

Vice President Pence described the White House's plans for a Space Force, a sixth branch of the USA military that would be responsible for operations in outer space, in a speech on Thursday.

"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force", Pence said.

But just past year, Mattis voiced skepticism on the need to create a separate Space Force.

WASHINGTON - The Trump administration's plan to establish a Space Force as a new branch of the military will unfold in phases and will require congressional approval.

This week, Mattis said the Pentagon and the White House "are in complete alignment" on the view of space as a potential battleground.

And Pence on Thursday said part of the plan for the Space Force involved setting up a US Space Command.

The latest example came from former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, who on Friday said Trump essentially "raffled off" the Space Force and called on Congress "sort this out". "The only person you hear promoting this is the president, so it'd be nice to get a little more of a buy-in from the experts and it doesn't seem like we have that".

In every domain, America will always seek peace, the vice president said.

University presidents and chancellors will be held "personally accountable" for any rule-breaking by their athletic departments. It's on us to restore the integrity of college basketball and continue to improve the interests of all student-athletes.

Mr Pence said that the United States administration will work with congress on the plan, and will outline a budget next year. US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis threw his support behind that idea on Tuesday.

Just as advances in aviation technology drove the emergence of air as a new battlefield in the 20th century, advances in space technology have made it clear that space is the new battlefield for the 21st century, the vice president said.

Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday delivered a speech at the Pentagon outlining the administration's plan to move forward with the Space Force, which including instructions for the Department of Defense to draft a legislative proposal for Congress. The sixth branch of the military will have a few new components, however.

Defense Secretary James Mattis has been among the skeptics who worry that a new branch of the military would create unnecessary and wasteful layers of bureaucracy while reducing rather than encouraging cooperation between existing branches.

A better idea would be elevating an organization within the Air Force to deal with space, Thompson said.

But just past year, Mattis voiced skepticism concerning the need to create a separate Space Force.

"We need to address space as a developing, war-fighting domain and a combatant command is certainly one thing that we can establish", he said.
