John McCain wrote a farewell letter to America before he died

Mr McCain's family said the late Vietnam War veteran, who was hailed as a hero for spending months in enemy prison after being captured, recently demanded that his doctors should stop administering medication because his cancer had reached irrecoverable stage.

John McCain sent one final farewell message to the American people and with it, one last condemnation of the President Donald Trump and his policies.

"Melania arranged for some handsome white lilies and roses to be sent to Cindy McCain as soon as she learned the sad news of John's death, along with a card expressing her condolences".

Trump made no comment when McCain chose to end treatment for brain cancer on Friday, and also failed to mention McCain earlier this month when he signed a defense-spending bill named for him. He was taken prisoner and held in the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison for more than five years.

John McCain, a senior member of the United States Senate and former presidential candidate, has died. Instead, Trump expressed condolences to his family.

News of McCain's passing first broke on Saturday night, just a day after it was revealed the 81-year-old politician would no longer receive treatment for brain cancer.

Trump tweeted (and Instagrammed) the following message about the Arizona senator on Saturday: "My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain". He did, however, ask that Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush deliver eulogies. She added, "Thank you for all your continued support and prayers".

"At that time I liked him personally for his toughness and strong stance", he told the newspaper Vietnam News, published by the official Vietnam News Agency.

US President Donald Trump, who clashed bitterly with McCain and in recent weeks had refused to mention him by name, tweeted a brief statement on Saturday.

McCain's congressional colleagues and personal allies - as well as his adversaries - issued statements of their own.

McCain will lie in state at the Arizona state capitol on Wednesday, followed by a memorial service in Phoenix on Thursday.

Despite the fact he was in spitting distance from the President, Trump ignored Karl and stared blankly at the pool of photographers.

After Trump in 2016 attacked Mexican immigrants - "They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists" - McCain said Trump was "firing up the crazies" with his views. According to multiple media reports, he nixed a statement drafted by administration staffers that would have lauded McCain's stellar record of military service.
