Senate Democrats demand 100,000 withheld Kavanaugh records

If confirmed, he'll replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has been a swing vote in favor of abortion rights.

In Kavanaugh's case, Republicans are circumventing the normal vetting process for Supreme Court nominees by in order to have him confirmed by October 1, the start of the court's new term.

It's a time Democrats say is key in giving context to his time as a partisan Republican.

Bush directed them to err 'on the side of transparency and disclosure, and we believe we have done so'.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called it 'a Friday night document massacre'.

But the letter said that the White House and the Department of Justice, conducting its own review of the presidential records, "have identified certain documents of the type traditionally protected by constitutional privilege".

According to the letter, most of those documents withheld are about "deliberations and candid advice concerning the selection and nomination of judicial candidates, the confidentiality of which is critical to any president's ability to carry out this core executive function".

Democrats have tried - unsuccessfully - to delay the Kavanaugh hearings, citing everything from Michael Cohen accusing Trump of criminal wrongdoing in court to the White House's decision to withhold 100,000 pages of records from Kavanaugh's service in the George W. Bush White House.

Bolton presses Russia about meddling in US election process
Putin "told us that his interest and Iran's were not exactly the same", Bolton told Reuters the day before, while he was still in Israel .

The Department of Justice and the White House said it had identified the documents to be within "constitutional privilege", Burck wrote in the letter, which was released by the Senate Judiciary Committee. They've exerted their executive power - 148,000 documents that I've seen, that you can not see, because they won't allow us to make them public.

"Republicans in the Senate and the president of the United States are colluding to keep Judge Kavanaugh's records secret and trying to hide their actions from the American people by doing it on the Friday night of a holiday weekend", Schumer said. "Only one senator has taken him up on this offer, and the requested documents have since been publicly released at Grassley's request".

To prepare for the hearing, Kavanaugh has participated in private rehearsals coordinated by the White House Counsel's Office, which have included more than a dozen participants - government lawyers, conservative academics, some of his former law clerks and even several senators.

On Sunday, Meet The Press host Chuck Todd mentioned to Sen.

"The Democrats have more than enough information to understand that this is a highly qualified jurist that should be the next Supreme Court justice", said Republican Sen.

Kavanaugh must win a majority of the 100-seat Senate to approve his nomination.

"I think it's much more powerful if we go in there and ask the questions".

There are also two Republican senators on the radar: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, both of whom are pro-choice.
