Ben Stiller cheered on Rafael Nadal from player's box during epic match

Finishing just after 2 a.m local time, the defending champion saw off his younger Austrian opponent 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) in what was his longest match at the US Open.

Del Potro, the No. 3 seed, got to the semifinals by defeating No. 11 John Isner 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Rafael Nadal has revealed the secret conversation he had with Dominic Thiem after their US Open match.

Twenty-four hours after Roger Federer fell to John Millman, his old rival avoided following him out of the tournament, but only just, completing a 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (7/5) victory at 2.03am USA time.

Spanish star Nadal - facing his fellow seed away from clay for the first time after 10 previous meetings - was 30-29 when losing the first set at a major but he rediscovered his best form to level the match, rising to the challenge by converting both break-point chances - having earned none in the first set - to halt the red-hot Thiem.

The fourth set was a wild 81-minute ride that began with Thiem facing break points, saw the Austrian threaten a double break before being pegged back and then a tired Nadal miss a chance to win the match.

In the fifth, Nadal held three break points at 5-all, love-40, but Thiem took the next five points told serve.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were both tested on their way to the quarter-finals of the US Open. Yeah, it was [a] question of little bit of luck at the end.

AFTER almost five hours on court, world No.1 Rafael Nadal and rising challenger Dominic Thiem had exhausted their tanks.

Wawrinka, Murray back with a bang
Marton and I were in ice baths next to each other. "For the first three sets, it was a survival mode for both of us". And Taylor Fritz scored his first five set victory, and he did it by coming from two sets down against Mischa Zverev.

"I mean, he's a great guy".

"It's going to be stuck in my mind", he said.

John Isner continued the best season of his career by reaching his first quarter-final in NY for seven years. "The only true is that you have to be able to do things better to be able to fight for the point and fight for the match, no?"

Laughing, Thiem said he did not think Nadal was "really sorry".

Stephens, who said she had been dealing with a sinus infection, rued all of her wasted opportunities, most notably the seven break points she failed to convert in the first set.

"The conditions have been tough out there, too". That mistake might have stayed in Nadal's head, because he played terribly in the ensuing tiebreaker. Even like this, I had a very lucky first set. I don't want to lose against anybody. "It's good to have now two days (without a match) that probably give me the chance to be 100 percent in the semi-finals".

Despite that, the 29-year-old was never broken in the 3 hour 31 minute match where Isner unleashed 26 aces but was undone by 52 unforced errors compared to Del Potro's 14.

"We fought the whole match and I survived with my serve which was key". Within the quarterfinals, the Tandil native defeated American John Isner with a rating of 6:7 (5:7), 6:three, 7:6 (7:four), 6:2.
