Florence strengthens 'rapidly,' now powerful Category 4 hurricane

North Carolina has only been hit by around a dozen less severe Category 3 storms since 1850, with the newly-upgraded hurricane now predicted to cause never before-seen levels of devastation when it arrives later this week. He also provided helpful pre- and post-storm tips to keep in mind to help keep you and your family safe.

Where is the hurricane now?

As of 11 a.m., Florence was centered about 580 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 13 mph.

A storm with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour classifies as a Category 3 major hurricane, according to the NHC.

Hurricane Florence strengthened to a Category 4 storm Monday afternoon as the monster squall continued its ominous advance towards the East Coast and residents scrambled to hunker down or evacuate.

Here's another look at the projected path showed the center of the storm hitting near the North Carolina cities of Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro.

What else should I know?

But authorities were taking no chances as the governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the approaching storm.

"Pretend, assume, presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of SC and is going to go way inshore", McMaster said.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Florence is being followed across the Atlantic by two other Hurricanes, Isaac and Helene, which are yet to reach the same size or intensity as Florence. It was upgraded to a Category 4 storm on Monday, with sustained winds at 130 miles per hour that are expected to increase further.

"Life-threatening freshwater flooding is likely from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event, which may extend inland over the Carolinas and Mid Atlantic for hundreds of miles as Florence is expected to slow down as it approaches the coast and moves inland."

Dare County officials ordered everyone to leave Hatteras Island on Monday.

"When weather forecasters tell us [the hurricane could be] life-threatening, we know that it is serious", Cooper said.

Swells generated by distant Florence have begun to impact the southeastern United States, including Florida, and will continue to do so through much of this week. Currently, three hurricanes with divergent paths are churning through the Atlantic, and most urgently, forecasters are sounding the alarm about Florence.

Florence was producing large swells expected to reach from the northern Caribbean to the southern coasts of Canada's Maritime provinces.
