Governing body defends umpire Carlos Ramos after Serena Williams blow up

Mark Knight's image in question shows Williams, who labelled the umpire a "thief" after she lost to Osaka during the U.S. Open final, was portrayed as a big black baby, while he drew Osaka as a blonde girl in the background.

Williams was handed a game-penalty at 5-4 down against Naomi Osaka - a move which ultimately sealed her defeat and ensured her chance of catching Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles is delayed. Serena denied seeing him.

There's a lot about the final game at Saturday's US Open that's disappointing, including Naomi Osaka having her moment overshadowed by poor calls from the ref.

Despite Williams pleading to Ramos that she would "rather lose" than "cheat to win," her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, later conceded that he was offering her guidance from his box at the match.

'Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis, ' the statement read.

Police say Cincinnati shooter's gun jammed during office rampage
The gunman was confronted by Cincinnati police officers inside of the building, officials said, and a shootout commenced. Four people were killed in downtown Cincinnati after a gunman opened fire in a bank at Fountain Square.

WTA CEO Steve Simon said in a statement that "there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men [vs.] women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same". At the trophy ceremony later that evening, the audience booed loudly; both Osaka and Williams cried, before embracing each other, as Williams came to her competitor's side. In an Instagram posted last night, Osaka thanked the designer, along with Dover Street Market and Adrian Joffe, for the "amazing dress" and "for the support".

"I definitely feel sympathy for her because I was actually commentating on the match and I witnessed the whole thing unfolding and it was incredibly dramatic", Croft told ITV's Good Morning Britain.

I can't sit here and say I wouldn't say he's a thief, because I thought he took a game from me. "They're going to be allowed to do that because of today", Williams stated.

During the final Williams discussed the penalty with the match official and repeatedly asked for an apology, and has since been fined $17,000 (around £13,000) for the incident. "I've seen it happen a few times where she starts to bully the situation and try to intimidate her opponents a little bit and she comes with these outbursts". While Kanell thinks that the warnings were independent of that, Bell thinks that Ramos took it more personally because Williams is a woman. First of all, she's amusing. I still think about that line once a week.

After the controversy, she left the suit at home and wore a stylish black-and-brown one-shoulder silhouette dress with a tulle skirt at her first US Open match this year.
