In dramatic course change, Obama comes out swinging against Trump

And the other comments Obama made at a Democratic rally in California didn't appear to impress Pirro either.

The former Democratic President hit Trump and Republicans hard on a variety of issues including health care, voting rights, campaign finance laws, and the economy, arguing that some policies GOP leaders are pursuing today aren't conservative.

Obama emphasized to the students the "stakes really are higher" regarding this year's midterms.

Former President Barack Obama says the midterm elections in November will give Americans the chance to - in his words - "restore some sanity in our politics" by changing control of Congress.

"Appealing to tribe, appealing to fear, pitting one group against another - that's an old playbook. He is just capitalising on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years", he added before condemning the Republican party for "shielding" Trump from facing the consequences of his worst actions.

Mr Trump, meanwhile, claims he fell asleep watching Mr Obama's speech. Accounts said Trump's aides don't trust him and were trying to curb some of his inclinations - including stealing papers off his desk.

He reiterated for fairness, justice and equality in every new political move by citizens of the USA and similarly democratic states. "We have the chance to flip the House of Representatives and make sure there are real checks and balances in Washington".

When that happens, he says, people become cynical and decide not to participate in the political process - creating a vacuum that lobbyists and special interests fill.

Actor Burt Reynolds Dead at 82
Reynolds excelled in football and was a star halfback at Florida State University before an injury derailed his career. However, it's the roles that Burt Reynolds turned down during the height of his fame that might be more noteworthy.

"That is not a check", Obama said.

In his speech, Obama criticized the divisive politics of the Trump era, decrying attacks on the freedom of the press, the justice system, and numerous other controversies. "You can be the generation that stood up and reminded us just how precious democracy is, and just how powerful it can be when we fight for it", he added. Some of the candidates he will reportedly appear alongside will include Josh Harder, who is running against Rep. Jeff Denham of Turlock; T.J. Cox, who is challenging Rep. David Valadao of Hanford; and Katie Hill, who is running for the seat now occupied by Rep. Steve Knight of Palmdale. Obama's latest foray into politics is likely to ignite Republicans, including Trump.

The speech comes ahead of Obama's first campaign events of the midterms: a rally for a handful of Democratic congressional candidates in California on Saturday and an event for Richard Cordray, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in OH, next Thursday.

The greatest threat to American democracy, the former president said, is not Donald Trump, Republicans in Congress, the Koch brothers, too much compromise from Democrats, or Russian hacking - the biggest threat to American democracy is cynicism.

Casting aside the traditional low profile of a former president, Obama returned to the campaign trail on Friday in IL in an effort to help Democrats running in the upcoming midterm elections.

Obama was accepting an ethics in government award at the university on Friday.

Obama's campaign activity will continue through October and will include fundraising appearances, according to an adviser.

That speech, in the eyes of Obama's team, was not a preview of the former President's midterm message. Pirro said. "How dare you!"
