NASA reveals ‘extremely dangerous’ Hurricane Florence pictures from space

Packing winds of up to 220 km/h (140 mph) late Monday, Florence was expected to further strengthen and become "an extremely unsafe major hurricane" by the time in makes landfall in the Carolinas on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a 21:00 UTC update.

As Hurricane Florence churned toward an eventual Eastern Seaboard landfall, more than 1 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along the United States south-east coast on Tuesday.

The eye of the storm is about 410 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and 975 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, N.C. It's moving west-northwest at 15 mph, the NHC said.

The governors of North and South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia declared states of emergency ahead of the approaching storm.

Carrying winds of up to 220 km/h as a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Florence is expected to strengthen and become a Category 5 storm on Tuesday (Weds NZT).

Hurricane Florence, which was briefly downgraded to a tropical storm last week, was re-upgraded to hurricane status on Sunday and looks like it is destined to barrel straight at the U.S.' East Coast.

The NHC warned that hurricane force winds may extend 65 kilometers from the center and tropical-storm-force winds may reach 240 kilometers outward. "We are totally prepared", Trump said at the White House, adding that the administration would go to Congress for emergency funding.

The Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, North Carolina, is just a few miles from where Florence is expected to make landfall. The potential for the storm to stall has residents packing sandbags and preparing for the major flooding that could follow.

As one of the nation's foremost experts on storm surge, he warned that if Florence hits at high tide, it could pose serious risks to property and life for any low-lying areas along the coast as well as along any inlets.

Several meteorologists said Florence could do what Hurricane Harvey did past year over Texas, dumping days of rain, although not quite as bad.

The storm is now around 650 km south of Bermuda and is moving at 26 km/h.

Florence is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 220 kilometers per hour and forecasters think it will gain more strength Tuesday or Wednesday.

McMaster lifted the evacuation orders Tuesday as projections showed Hurricane Florence moving further north.

"But central Mass. over towards the Berkshires could get some rain", Simpson said.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, most conferences and leagues were still monitoring the storm, which is expected to make landfall Thursday night, but schedule changes were beginning to roll in.

"The forecast places North Carolina in the bull's-eye of Hurricane Florence, and the storm is rapidly getting stronger", he said. "The term mandatory evacuation rings hollow because there's no good way to actually enforce it but if you call it something else people are not going to follow".
