Lexus’ New ES ditches side mirrors for video cameras

Essentially, the side mirrors are cameras, and the live feed is displayed on left and right screens inside the cabin.

Lexus says its new, seventh-generation ES is set to become available in October 2018 (in the Japanese market, at least) with what it describes as the "world's first" digital exterior mirrors.

Of course, the Lexus isn't the only vehicle we've seen lately to use cameras to replace wing mirrors, but the new ES has beaten the Audi E-tron to market by quite a distance. This allows for enhanced views of the area around the vehicle at night and in inclement weather, Lexus says.

According to Lexus, they also give the driver an expanded view of the car's surrounding area by augmenting the display during cornering or reversing.

Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif's wife passes away
Politicians from various political parties and high-level government officials also expressed deep grief over the death. Begum Kulsoom led defiant, lonely protests against the Musharraf regime to get her husband freed from prison.

Lexus says that this camera system removes bulky mirrors on the side of the auto cleaning up the view.

We're surprised it's taken this long for manufacturers to catch on, but Lexus is finally offering digital wing mirrors as an option for the upcoming ES replacement model.

With Lexus's "Digital Outer Mirrors", the typical glass mirror pods are replaced by rear-facing digital cameras.

- The camera will display the images on a monitor inside the cabin placed at the bottom of the A-pillar. And as the cameras cause less drag than mirrors, there's less annoying wind noise too. Whenever the driver uses the car's indicators or engages reverse "the system automatically enhances the corresponding area".
