Hurricane Florence expected To Be 'catastrophic'

The outer rim of Category 2 Hurricane Florence has already hit the North Carolina coast.

Calling the storm surge prediction "incredible", Graham said that because Florence will likely nudge its way onto the coast, giving its hurricane winds lots of time to force water inland, he wouldn't be surprised "to see storm surge a mile, a mile and a half inland - maybe even two miles or more, in some cases". Then it is likely to hover along the coast Saturday, pushing up to 11 feet (3.3 meters) of storm surge and unloading water on both states.

"The President offered his support and reiterated the federal government's willingness to help with whatever is needed", Mrs. Sanders said in a statement to White House pool reporters. Noting the heavy bands on the hurricane's northeast quadrant, he added, "We are on the bad side of this storm".

With the storm already making an impact on the coastline, these are the most commonly asked questions, answered by the NBC Charlotte First Warn Storm Team. The Navy, Air Force and Army have been moving people, ships and aircrafts out of harm's way, though evacuations were not mandatory at bases such as Camp Lejeune.

As of 10am Thursday (local time), Florence's top winds were 177km/h, and it was marching northwest at16km/h, about 257km east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and 329km east-southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Areas that will be particularly susceptible to tropical storm conditions will be our far southeastern zones.

The eye of Florence continues to churn about 180 miles from the North Carolina coast Thursday morning.

The remainder of SC and North Carolina into southwest Virginia could see 6 to 12 inches, with some isolated areas seeing 15 inches.

The result could be what the Houston area saw during Hurricane Harvey just over a year ago - catastrophic inland flooding that could swamp homes, businesses, fields and industrial sites. Officials say people refusing to evacuate could end up alone, drenched and in the dark, as rescue crews won't go out to help in winds above 50 miles per hour (80 kph).

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet were also forecast in some areas along with the possibility of tornadoes in North Carolina.

"Don't relax, don't get complacent".

More than 20,000 residents have packed into North Carolina emergency shelters, and officials have told those still in the storm's path to stay in place. "Today the threat becomes a reality".

But Florence, the Weather Channel reports, is "set to debunk climatology". That system could develop into a tropical depression by Friday.

Boeing evacuated several new 787-10 Dreamliner jets from its factory in North Charleston, South Carolina, to protect them from the storm. Home Depot and Lowe's activated emergency response centres to get generators, rubbish bags and bottled water to stores before and after the storm.

"We don't even know them", he said.

"Many of the people here have never seen a storm this strong".

Florence's weakening as it neared the coast created tension between some who left home and authorities who anxious that the storm could still be deadly.
