Prior to his time at LSU, Sims attended University High School in Baton Rouge, where he was the 2014-15 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year and earned a first-team All-State selection.

Athletic director Joe Alleva also released a statement.

Detectives are investigating the homicide that happened in the 600 block of Harding Boulevard around 12:25 a.m. "There's problems everywhere, so you just want to educate your guys as best as possible to stay away from those situations and unfortunately, sometimes, these lessons are the toughest". To say we are grief-stricken is an understatement. "God bless Wayde Sims".

Our thoughts are with the Sims family and LSU community during this tragedy. A standout at University High, located on LSU's campus, Sims helped lead his high school team to three consecutive state championships.
