20 people killed in vehicle crash involving limo in upstate NY

The driver of a limousine carrying the four sisters and other revelers celebrating a 30th birthday barreled through an intersection, ignoring a stop sign, and slammed into an SUV parked outside a store, killing all 18 people inside the limo.

They say the limousine had failed a recent inspection, and the driver - Scott T. Lisinicchia, 53, of Lake George, New York - did not have the proper driver's license. The party had initially booked some sort of bus to transport them to the venue but were assigned the limousine after the original vehicle broke down.

He added, "It's not supposed to be on the road".

Two additional pedestrians and the limo driver were killed during the crash.

It also failed an on-site state inspection.

"In my opinion, the owner of this company had no business putting a failed vehicle on the road", the governor said while attending a Columbus Day Parade in New York City.

New York State Police said they would provide more information at a news conference on Sunday.

Prestige Limousine issued a statement Monday expressing condolences to victims' families and saying it was conducting "a detailed internal investigation", while also meeting with state and federal authorities, according to The New York Times.

Amy Steenburg, whose birthday was cause for the celebration, and her three sisters have been identified as those among the dead. In limousines, rear passengers are not required to wear seat belts, Goelz said. "On top of that we do our own background check", Velastegui said.

Axel Steenburg's brother Rich Steenburg had also been along on the fatal trip, The Times reports.

"If somebody's new to the area or not familiar with the area, I can see how it'd be easy to miss that you're coming down to the T-intersection and going to have to stop at the bottom of it", he said.

State police confirmed 18 of the victims were inside the limousine, while the other two were pedestrians standing in the vehicle park of the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe.

In another interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," Kindlon disputed assertions by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who on Monday said the Department of Transportation had faulted the limo's "suspension system, chassis system, braking system".

"One just got married and that's what this was: her new husband was giving her a surprise birthday party", she told the New York Post. "They had their whole lives ahead of them", she said. "There was seven of us - five sisters and two brothers", King said.
