"It's going to move to our west and northwest during the day today", Austin said.

Mexico Beach is "gone".

"Oh my God, what are we seeing?" said evacuee Rachel Franklin, her mouth hanging open.

Hurricane Michael flattened rows of houses, ripped apart shopping centres and petrol stations, hurled boats into buildings, and toppled trees and trucks, as it smashed into the Florida Panhandle, a 200-mile stretch in the north-west of the state.

In Panama City, most homes were still standing, but no property was left undamaged.

Among those brought to safety were nine people rescued by helicopter from a bathroom of their home in hard-hit Panama City after their roof collapsed, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Hodges said.

Crews were out early Thursday searching for more victims. The U.S. Coast Guard ran 10 rescue missions into the region Wednesday night. County officials say they're not releasing names or other details yet while families are notified. They're also trying to figure out the extent of damage to roads and bridges.

There have been five confirmed storm-related deaths so far - four in Florida's Gadsden County and one in Georgia.

Linda Marquardt, 67, rode out the storm with her husband at their home in Mexico Beach. Based on wind speed, it was the fourth-strongest. One of the carport's legs punctured the roof and hit the 11-year-old girl in the head. Authorities have been unable to fully assess the damage due to debris blocking roadways, and cell service is unavailable in some areas. But he said the sheriff told him it looked like a bomb had gone off.

Scott, who expressed frustration about people dismissing evacuation orders on Tuesday as Michael rapidly grew into a Category 4 storm, told evacuees not to return home as roads remain closed by flooding, downed trees, and power lines.

As it came ashore, Michael was just shy of a Category 5 - defined as a storm packing top sustained wind speeds of 157 miles per hour or above.

I hate to break it to you, but it looks like we've been messing up the pronunciation of our royal bride's name this entire time . There will be a number of charities among the 1,200 invited guests, including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the U.N.

The latest advisory said Michael was located 180 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla., moving northward at 12 mph.

By early Friday it wasn't almost over yet: a tropical storm long after Wednesday's landfall, Michael stubbornly kept up its punch while barreling over land toward an expected exit across the open Atlantic.

The strength of Michael may be reflective of the effect climate change has on storms.

According to Stormwater Solutions, the storm is the first Category 4 storm to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle and the strongest storm in the US this year.

At least two people were killed when the nearly category 5 hurricane ripped through Florida's Panhandle.

Patterson estimated 1,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed in his town of 3,500 people.

A landscape that once drew vacationers to secluded beaches was littered with refrigerators, toilets and staircases no longer connected to houses. Another man was shining a flashlight from his balcony as alarms sounded and fires burned.

After pummeling Florida, Michael barreled through Georgia.

Michael is expected to dump 4 to 7 inches of rain from eastern Georgia to the southern mid-Atlantic and up to 9 inches of rain in parts of North Carolina and Virginia, the National Hurricane Center said.

Michael was more intense at landfall than hurricanes Andrew, Katrina and Maria.

According to various local electrical providers, more than 800,000 homes have lost power in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and SC as a result of the storm.
