A Met Office spokesman said: "As Storm Callum passes to the northwest of the United Kingdom, a period of heavy rain will affect South Wales during Friday, with further spells of persistent and heavy rain at times during Saturday". Gusts in excess of 90 km/h were recorded widely, with up to 125 km/h gusts in parts of the west.

Mudslides were reported in Cork and water "overtopping" at docks in Galway.

The main impacts for the United Kingdom will be from heavy rain across some western areas on Friday and Saturday, with yellow Met Office weather warnings for wind and rain now in place for Friday and Saturday.

Edinburgh will see a very windy start to the day, but winds will slowly ease as the day progresses. The low centre may drift further west and the winds will not be as strong.

Northern Ireland Electricity Networks said 1,000 customers had been left without power, while Electricity North West said four weather-related faults had led to problems for 419 customers in Cumbria and Lancashire.

In the Republic, where Storm Callum was set to first make landfall, a national emergency co-ordination group met yesterday for a briefing on the dangers posed by the intense weather system.
