Diego Maradona slams Lionel Messi in freaky rant

The Argentina legend, who is now managing Mexican second-tier side Dorados, dances in and out of the limelight at will, but his latest comments are sure to irk his fellow countryman Lionel Messi, with whom he previously managed at worldwide level.

And while appearing on "The Last Word Mexico" television programme, Maradona launched into a tirade against the Barcelona superstar and slammed his leadership skills, having initially praised him. You say to Messi to "throw yourself in head first" but he prefers to play video games.

Speaking at a media conference in the United Arab Emirates, Khaldoon al Mubarak confirmed that City made a serious play to sign the Argentine prior to him signing his latest contract extension at Barcelona.

However, Messi's cousin, Maxi Biancucchi have had enough of Maradona's jibe and made a decision to respond to his latest comments.

Maradona, who led Argentina to victory in 1986, said Messi, who was again unable to emulate that feat in Russian Federation this summer was expected to be "the saviour of the fatherland".

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola believes the football world is witnessing an era of "two phenomena" with the exploits of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester City have refuted claims that they offered to triple Lionel Messi's salary in a bid to sign the Argentina global from Barcelona. "We wait for him and we know what is most important for us".

"I wouldn't call him up right now, but never say never", he said. Then, on the pitch, he wants to be the leader.

However, Messi has not officially retired from the national team.
