Govt appoints Nageshwar Rao as interim CBI chief

Commenting on Twitter, Prashant Bhushan said, "Read this detailed & documented story on Nageshwar Rao appointed as acting Director CBI by illegally removing the present Director". Here's all you need to know about the controversy.

The Delhi Police on Thursday morning detained four persons outside the home of ousted Central Bureau of Investigation Director Alok Verma for allegedly lurking around the building and trying to spy, NDTV reported. An FIR was registered against Asthana - said to be close to multiple officials at the PMO - by the CBI in a bribery and corruption case a week ago, followed by Asthana's complaint to the CVC in which he alleged that Verma was interfering and impeding his probe in different cases. However, Asthana's promotion was cleared.

The CVC said the Director had created "wilful obstructions" in the functioning of the commission, which is a constitutional body and was "non-cooperative and non-compliant". The men were caught by Verma's security guard and later taken inside the home.

K Vijayarama Rao, who headed the CBI in the early 90s, saw the agency through some tough investigations, including the Babri Masjid demolition, Beant Singh's assassination, the Jain Hawala case, the Purulia Arms drop case and also the Chandraswami case, to mention a few.

Again - Threatens to Send Military to US-Mexico Border
Bush deployed the National Guard to assist in border security operations in 2006 and President Barack Obama did the same in 2010. NBC reports that USA officials are now tracking that small group as they make progress towards the US.

The CBI has alleged that bribes were given at least five times between December 2017 and October 2018. Rao then sent out letters to the officers part of both Verma's and Asthana's team on leave. Those named in the case are Bhaben Maitra, Abinash Kumar Sarkar, Subhashree Das, Jayaram Garada, Bipra Charana Maharana, Jisudan Khosla, Urdhab Khola and Sadananda Nayak and some "unknown officials". Investigating agencies can never be government's pets.

Devender Kumar was on Tuesday remanded to seven-day CBI custody and suspended from the CBI pending investigation. The court ruled that until October 29, no action can be taken against Asthana. "The odd timing of the late midnight orders also confirms that they are made mala fide", states the petition. Delhi HC has also clarified that this does not qualify as a stay on the probe into the claims. The top court has scheduled the hearing of his plea for Friday. Also on the list were HoB Ram Gopal, SP Satish Dagar and director generals, namely A Sai Manohar, Arun Kumar Sharma, V Murugesan and additional SP SS Gurm.

Opposition leaders have accused the Modi government of using the CBI as a tool to settle scores with his political opponents.
