Microsoft, Apple battle to be most valuable USA company

Microsoft and Apple are competing head-to-head to be the most valuable company. Still, Apple was back on top by the stock market's close, with a market value of more than $825 billion.

Apple's market capitalization overtook Microsoft's in 2010 as the maker of Windows software struggled with slow demand for personal computers, due in part to the explosion of smartphones driven by the iPhone.

Microsoft and Apple were bitter rivals for decades.

Now Apple became the first ever trillion d=dollar company ever known to the technological history of mankind.

Yet now, that very product is among the challenges facing Apple, with concerns over weak iPhone demand pressuring shares to fall more than 25 percent from record levels. In August, Apple's market cap rose above the $1 trillion level, becoming the first US stock to reach that level.

Microsoft isn't immune to weakness in the technology sector, although it has held up much better, falling about 8 per cent from its own all-time high in October as investors take to its enterprise-oriented business, as well as the success of its cloud-computing division.

Just four months after Apple Inc breached the $1 trillion mark, the iPhone maker has lost its lead as Wall Street's most valuable company and is on the verge of being replaced by Microsoft Corp.

According to Rich Ross, a technical analyst at Evercore ISI, Apple's stock "has another 18 per cent downside", which could take the stock to $140, its 200-week moving average.

Microsoft had rallied by more than 3 percent during Monday's official trading session, when the market notched broad gains. Last month, however, Apple's stock tumbled on a disappointing outlook for the holiday season this quarter. While MSFT began to see a pick up in market cap again in the early 2010s, it couldn't keep up with Apple.
