Burnham's MP to support Theresa May in tonight's no confidence vote

Burnham's MP to support Theresa May in tonight's no confidence vote

"Tonight's vote makes no difference to the lives of our people", Corbyn said in a statement.

This evening, May told Tory MPs she will not be leading the party into the next general election, Amber Rudd said.

The result of this secret ballot may well sway the course of history.

May needs 158 votes to win - and if she does, there can't be another challenge for a year.

But the European Union has vowed not to budge, and she came home to a potential leadership challenge.

As investors and allies tried to work out the ultimate destination for the world's fifth-largest economy, rebel lawmakers in May's party said she had to go.

May has not said what she will do if, as many expect, there is an early election triggered by Britain's Brexit crisis.

Just before the vote May revealed she was prepared to bow out as prime minister by not contesting the next general election in a move created to buy her time to complete the Brexit plans.

If she had lost the confidence vote Mrs May would have been forced to stand down as Conservative Party leader, and then as prime minister. It's possible that under the newly centralised party membership system, a ballot could be held by email, but many members would want a postal vote.

The PM thought she had seen off an attempt by this group of Brexiteers to get rid of her last month.

She's in this position, her critics say, because of the choices and missteps she has made.

But he said the DUP would not support a no-confidence motion in Parliament at this stage.

What happens if she doesn't get the support of MPs?

However, he noted that all the participants will be listened to in order to arrive at a consensus on the issue. Whether to exempt Iran from making any cuts was one sticking point in the meeting, said a delegate.

But while she was meeting European Union leaders in The Hague, Berlin and Brussels, MPs at home, exasperated at what they regard as her lack of leadership, were firing off letters of no confidence. She said she has listened to them and that it is now time to get on with delivering Brexit.

But a rising number of backbench lawmakers, along with three of four living former premiers, say the only way out of the impasse may be a new referendum with an option to stay.

And some Somerset MPs have been nailing their colours to the mast ahead of the vote. Some MPs have already insisted that this doesn't mean they will fall into line. "She must now bring her dismal deal back to the House of Commons next week so Parliament can take back control".

The threshold of 48 letters calling for a leadership vote from Tory MPs was passed, triggering a vote of no confidence.

"The only thing that seems clear is this decision to trigger a leadership election at this time could be potentially disastrous for the Conservative Party's electoral fortunes". None of that would be in the national interest.

Why are they trying to get rid of her?

Anger has focused on the so-called "backstop" to prevent the return of a physical border in Northern Ireland.

"I will contest that vote with everything I've got". "Every leader's made the mistake of feeding this monster, that always then turns around and gobbles them up", she said.

Who are the frontrunners to lead the party if she loses?

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab are the bookmakers' favourites for the top job if May loses the confidence vote.

Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: "With only weeks left before Britain leaves the EU, Theresa May's weakness and failure has completely immobilised the Government at this critical time for the country".

But questions were raised over whether she was privately assuring colleagues she would step down once the Brexit process was over, after a senior Downing Street source told reporters that tonight's vote was not about choosing a leader to take the party into the next election.
