Dutch PM calls Strasbourg shooting

Cherif Chekatt was killed in the Neudorf area of the city in northeast France after a police operation was launched around 20:00 GMT on Thursday, sources said.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the dead man's identity hasn't been confirmed yet.

Cherif Chekatt killed three and injured another 13 people at a Christmas market in the French city of Strasbourg on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, dozens of French police including members of the elite RAID force cordoned off an area of southern Strasbourg where the gunman was last seen.

Strasbourg's mayor has said the attack was "indisputably an act of terrorism" and, with the gunman on the run, France has raised its security threat to the highest level.

Mr Nunez said on France-Inter radio that police sought to arrest the man on Tuesday morning, hours before the shooting, in relation to an attempted murder.

The European Parliament was on lockdown as the search for the gunman continued, British Member of the European Parliament Charles Tannock tweeted from inside.

Department of Information chief Busadee Santipitaks said diplomats were helping her with accommodation and will work closely with French police if further developments arise.

Police have issued a wanted poster for Chérif Chekatt, the main suspect in the attack, who was on the "Fiche S" watchlist.

He said several similar police operations have taken place since the attack.

Chekatt's police file photo shows a bearded man of North African descent, with a prayer bruise on the centre of his forehead.

Four Dead, 11 Shot Near Strasbourg Christmas Market
Strasbourg suspect: A violent criminal still at large

Chekatt is accused of attacking a crowded Christmas market Tuesday.

French authorities said that the suspect, born in Strasbourg, had run-ins with police from the age of 10 and his first conviction was at 13.

Having been convicted 27 times for robbery and other crimes, Chekkat was sent to prison between 2013 and 2015.

"We can't give in to fear because life, the festivities, our culture, the joy, of which this Christmas market is a symbol, must win through", said Castaner.

Two people were killed and a third victim who was hospitalized has now died, the Paris Prosecutor's office said.

The gunman then fled the scene in a taxi, getting out in the city's southern Neudorf district, where he again exchanged fire with police before disappearing.

It came amid a month of protests against President Emmanuel Macron that have blocked roads around the country, led to rioting in the capital and put heavy strain on police.

In Rome, the foreign ministry said one of the injured was an Italian journalist covering the European parliament, but did not confirm media reports that he was in a serious condition.

The city was in mourning, with candles lit at the site of the attack, and the Christmas market was closed at least through Thursday, according to regional prefect Jean-Luc Marx.

Three people were killed in the market attack, including a Thai tourist named by the embassy in Paris as Anupong Suebsamarn, 45.
