Curse of Klopp! Jurgen outsmarted Jose Mourinho yet again

United's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend means they have 26 points after 17 Premier League games, their worst tally at this stage of the season since 1990-91.

He improved their league form in 2017/18, leading United to second place, 19 points behind cross-town rivals Manchester City and ensured the Champions League would return to Old Trafford for the second consecutive season.

Manchester United has sacked its manager Jose Mourinho, following a dismal start to the 2018/19 season.

United plan to hire a caretaker manager until the end of the season, before appointing a permanent successor.

United's next fixture is against Cardiff in the Premier League on Saturday.

It wasn't always like this for Mourinho and stats show how his United tenure has left a stain on his career and reputation after his previous success at Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.

Since then David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all been sacked after failing to win the league or maintain the philosophy the Scot instilled into the giants of English football.

He has won EFL Cup and Europa League honours with United and last season guided the club to a highest league finish and points tally since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Mourinho routinely dropped the club's most expensive ever signing, £89 million ($113 million) midfielder Paul Pogba, to start a power struggle he has ultimately lost.

A steep bill for most people but with Mourinho reportedly receiving over £20m from Man United after having his contract terminated, he will have plenty of funds to settle his hotel account.

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward ended Mourinho's reign during a brief meeting at the club's training ground on Tuesday morning.

The wound went even deeper for Mourinho as City are managed by Pep Guardiola, who got the better of him when he was in charge at Barcelona and Mourinho was at Real Madrid. "I am more than happy", said the Portuguese, who left Pogba on the bench at Anfield. What is the point of bringing in the most flawless manager to lead United forward only to then hamstring him with misguided direction from the boardroom which has already proven to only hamper rather than help the club's fortunes?

United said on Tuesday that Mourinho's departure allows the club to overhaul the transfer strategy and implement the director of football structure Mourinho opposed.
