Philippines Tops Gender Equality Ranking In Asia

"This year's analysis also warns about the possible emergence of new gender gaps in advanced technologies, such as the risks associated with emerging gender gaps in Artificial Intelligence-related skills", the report's authors write. Thus, the gap between men and women in the areas of health and education have increased.

The report, however, noted that Manila needs to improve in closing the gender gap in its health and survival category.

It is going to take 108 years to close the overall gender gap and 202 years to bring about parity in the workplace, says the World Economic Forum.

European countries dominated the top spots with Norway (2nd, 83.5%), Sweden (3rd, 82.2%), and Finland (4th, 82.1%).

While the gender gap in STEM is well chronicled, a new analysis conducted in collaboration with LinkedIn points to a glaring gender gap that is developing among AI professionals, where women represent only 22% of the AI workforce.

It found the largest gender disparity occurs in the political empowerment section, which measures the number of women in positions of political influence, with a gap of 77.1 per cent.

The annual report uses the Global Gender Gap Index to see how countries covered in it compare in terms of gender equality in four key areas - economic participation and opportunities, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

"The overall picture is that gender equality has stalled", said Saadia Zahidi, head of social and economic agendas at the World Economic Forum (WEF).

And while China, like most other countries, has almost flawless equality in terms of health care, far more boys than girls are born each year. Almost 78 percent of the gender gap is closed, therefore, in this country.

The other three pillars - education, health and politics - saw their gender gaps widen in 2018.

Iceland: "It has closed over 85% of its overall gender gap". The WEF ranked the United Kingdom 50th out of 149 countries for gender pay, with women collecting 70 per cent of that paid to men. Women have as much access to financial services as men in just 60 percent of the countries and to land ownership in just 42 percent.

"In the workplace, women still encounter significant obstacles in taking on managerial or senior official roles", the report said.

As in previous years, the Nordic countries took the top spots in the ranking with Iceland ranking first for the tenth consecutive year.

"More than ever, can not afford to companies, to waive the skills, ideas and perspectives of half of humanity", said WEF founder Klaus Schwab in the report.

With an average remaining gender gap of 34.2pc, South Asia was the second-lowest scoring region on this year's Global Gender Gap Index, ahead of the Middle East and North Africa and behind Sub-Saharan Africa.
