Guatemalan boy, 8, dies in United States border custody

An 8-year-old boy has died in the hospital after he and his father illegally crossed the border into the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said in a statement.

In a statement, US Customs and Border Protection said the eight year old had displayed "signs of potential illness" on Monday and was taken to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the boy was diagnosed with a cold and a fever.

Alonzo, who was with his apprehended father, was later transferred back to the hospital suffering from nausea and vomiting.

Officials said the boy, who was in CBP custody, started showing signs of "a potential illness" on December 24.

Agency guidelines say immigrants generally shouldn't be detained for more than 72 hours in CBP holding facilities, which are usually smaller and have fewer services than ICE's detention centres.

The death comes two weeks after another migrant child, Jakelin Caal Maquin, died after being detained by border agents.

He also sought a congressional investigation into the death.

"Many questions remain unanswered, including how many children have died in CBP custody", Castro said. The form was in English, but CBP officials said agents provided a verbal translation.

The ministry said the boy crossed over into the USA through El Paso in Texas on December 18 and was taken into custody on December 23.

An investigation into CBP actions will be conducted by the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility, the news release said.

The Washington Post, who first reported her death, quoted border officials as saying she had died of liver failure brought about by dehydration and shock, and that she "reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days".

Jakelin Caal and her father had been detained by immigration authorities on December 6 in New Mexico as part of a group of 163 people who approached United States agents to turn themselves in, it was reported.

Jakelin Caal's funeral was being held in her family's village in Guatemala.

Hours later her temperature skyrocketed to 40.9 degrees Celsius and emergency medical teams had to revive her. She was ultimately flown to an El Paso hospital, where she died the next day. The White House did not immediately comment on the boy's death Tuesday.
