Bird Box Hits 45 Million Views in One Week According to Netflix

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is up 1.85% in premarket trading after Friday's late afternoon tweet on huge streaming numbers for Bird Box. According to Business Insider, that means around 33% of Netflix accounts viewed the film. In a tweet on December 28, Netflix announced that the thriller had been streamed by over 45 million accounts. "When an account is counted, it 'may include multiple views and viewers but is only counted once'".

That's a truly fantastic number: actually, 45,037,125 as of December 28, according to a Netflix tweet: the "best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!" That number could be significantly higher considering friends and family may have watched the show together.

The fact that Netflix defines a view as having watched 70% of the movie is also notable.

China Trade Talks to Take Place in Beijing in Early January
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said last week the US team and its counterparts have held discussions over the phone. Bloomberg says the meeting adds to signs that the two largest economies in the world are cooling off trade tensions.

I'd hope we can assume there's a good faith basis for saying 45 million, but there aren't any more details offered. Does it log "viewers" who only watch a few seconds or the entire film? Plenty of folks share Netflix accounts, so some of those Bird Box viewings may be by more than one person at once. He called it "a sea change in the entertainment promotional complex".

So while it's hard to compare to traditional movie sales, the current top movie at the box office, Aquaman, grossed $137 million in its first week and sold close to 15 million tickets. "There was not the scorched-earth publicity campaign employed by movie studios to make you aware of a film you most likely do not want to see".

"Streaming services have gotten away with opting not to share the abundance of viewership information to which they have access, but as more traditional corners of the entertainment industry feel increasingly jealous of their 45 million-plus pairs of eyes, the blindfold may be coming off", concludes CNN.
